Interview K-Code, No. 11, 2002
Photograpphy is my theatre. The challenge is to create a stage on which the models feel free and can express themselves. I only set the environments by arranging new scenes, themes and combinations of models to create a space where my heroines can totally open themselves. It is very thrilling to lead the models on the narrow road between lust and pain to this point. This gives mental satisfaction.
It is more inspiration coming while working. Of course there must be a concept in the beginning to choose the location, light and theme. The best sessions depend on a good relationship between photographer and model. I am not very inspired when a model keeps on asking how to look in the camera and what to do. The pictures are much better when photographer and model inspire each other. The models ideas are as much important as mine.
Most of all photographers I respect Jeanloup Sieff. Nobody was able to work out the expression of the models better. Beyond his fashion work he showed the fragility and sadness of the girls he shot. But most influence of my art does not come from other photographers: it has been the art, style and philosophies of Rozz Williams, the founder of Christian Death, a gothic rock band which started in the early eighties. Music is very important, it is the strongest way to express feelings. Unfortunately, I do not have the talent to play an instrument.
K Code:
How do you choose your models?
Arne Jahn:
Most of them are girls I met on fetish or gothic parties in Hamburg. I like to work with non-professionals. They are more natural and they are doing it for the fun, not for the money. They love to gain new experiences. Usually, it takes much more time to get to know each other by hanging around, talking and drinking than the shooting itself. With non-professionals it is easier to lead them to the point where they really feel what they express.
K Code:
When did you start, how and what is next?
Arne Jahn:
It started one night in 1995 with my former girlfriend. We were bored and I borrowed my friends camera to shoot some pictures from her in her nice PVC party-outfit. We got very inspired and it ended with a ten hour shooting. After that experience I decided to become a world famous photographer. By the way, she thought the pictures were absolutely terrible and a waste of material. But my decision was made as I had nothing better to do.
I spent about four years of learning auto-didactically and developing my photographic themes and style before going into public with my work in 1999. My photographic themes reflect my private obsessions.
There are several exhibitions planned for this year, i.e. in USA. Maybe I am ready to start with a short movie at the end of the year. And, of course, many new photographic sessions, monthly updated on my website.
Keep the faith.
